About this guide and how we choose

Women’s Mules is an independent buying and style guide to backless shoes, run by WellTracked.

What this site is

Mules are easy to love and easy to get wrong. A half size too long and they slap and slide; the wrong heel and they wobble; the wrong material and they are ruined by the first wet day. Most roundups list the same shoes with invented testing. We wanted a guide that explains the shoe itself: the styles, how a backless shoe should fit, which widths and footbeds help, and how to wear them.

How we choose

We have not worn or tested these shoes. Nothing on this site claims hands-on testing, wear trials or scores of our own. Instead:

  1. Facts come from makers and retailers. Widths, heel heights, footbeds and sizing systems come from pages such as Dansko’s size guide and retailer listings, which we link where we use them.
  2. Maker claims are labeled as claims. When a brand says a footbed supports the arch, we say the brand says so. Seals such as the APMA Seal of Acceptance are reported as listed, model by model.
  3. Fit advice is labeled as general guidance. Our fit checks come from how backless shoes are built. Brand charts come first.
  4. Style notes cite the publication. Trend notes link to the magazine or news coverage they come from, such as Global News on fall 2026 shoes.
  5. No scores, star ratings, prices or product photos. Prices and stock change daily, so our shop buttons are searches that show current listings.
  6. Uncertain means we say so. Where sizing varies by brand, we tell you to check the chart rather than guess.

The illustrations

Every shoe drawing on this site is an original illustration of a style, not a picture of a specific product.

How the site earns

Some links go to Amazon with our affiliate tag. If you buy, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That never decides what we suggest. Details are on the affiliate disclosure page.

Corrections

Brands change lasts, widths and materials. We review pages regularly and show when each was last reviewed.

Who we are
