How the finder decides
- Occasion and heel set the style. Everyday flats point to flat mules, work flats to loafer mules, lots of walking to contoured footbeds and clogs, cold weather to lined mules. Heel height then moves you along each row, from flat to low block or kitten to a taller heel.
- Width sets the fit note and the search words. Wide adds "wide width" to every search and favors straps and roomier toes. Narrow adds "narrow" and suggests tightening options.
- Budget sets the brands to search. Value points to Amazon Essentials, Dr. Scholl’s and Steve Madden; mid-range to Sam Edelman, Vionic and Franco Sarto; investment to Birkenstock, Dansko and Tory Burch. These are suggestions to search, not ranked picks.

Questions people ask
Are the finder suggestions tested shoes?
No. The finder suggests a style and brands to search, chosen from how each style is built and what it suits. We have not worn the shoes. Check the size chart and reviews on any listing.
Why does the finder suggest a style instead of one shoe?
Mule sizing changes from brand to brand and stock changes daily. A style plus a fit rule travels better than one product that may be gone or run small next month.
What if I am between widths?
Choose standard and look for an adjustable strap or buckle. A strap lets one shoe fit a range of feet, which matters more on a backless shoe than on a closed one.
