The short answer
Filter for W (wide) sizes in your usual length, choose round or square toes, and favor adjustable straps or buckles. Easy Spirit sells the Traveltime in wide, and Dansko and Birkenstock make widths on some clogs. Do not size up for width: a longer mule slips at the heel.
Why sizing up does not work
Shoe width grows only a little as length grows. Going up a size to get width means your heel sits further from the back edge and the vamp sits further up your foot, where it is too loose to hold. The result is a mule that slaps and slips. Wide widths keep the length and add room across the ball of the foot.
What to look for
Wide width mule checklist
| Feature | Why | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| W or wide sizes | Room across the ball of the foot | Sizing up for width |
| Round or square toe | Space for toes and bunions | Narrow pointed toes |
| Adjustable strap or buckle | Fits a range of foot volumes | A fixed, shallow vamp |
| Soft leather or suede | Gives a little as you wear it | Rigid patent or stiff synthetics |
| Low, wide heel | Less forward slide | Tall slim heels |

Fit checks for wide feet
- The widest part of your foot should sit at the widest part of the shoe, without the upper bulging.
- Your heel still sits fully on the footbed with no overhang.
- The vamp or strap is snug, not tight; a mark on your skin after an hour means it is too tight.

Questions people ask
Should I size up in mules if I have wide feet?
No. Sizing up adds length, and extra length in a backless shoe makes your heel slip and your foot slide forward. Look for wide widths in your usual length instead.
Which mule styles suit wide feet?
Round and square toes, soft leather or suede uppers that give a little, adjustable straps and clogs with roomy toe boxes. Narrow pointed toes and rigid patent leather are the hardest.
Does Birkenstock make the Boston in wide?
Birkenstock makes the Boston in Regular and Narrow. Regular is the roomier of the two and is described as suiting medium to wider feet.
